Hello SAMPE!

I'm sure there are some SAMPE PEs in our crowd aware of this, but I would like to share the interesting debate going on in the National Society of Professional Engineers forum, which apparently has been going on for a long, long time. The shortened version is, in my own interpretation, what level of education/experience is necessary to achieve professional accreditation in your field?

Several healthy discussions have ensued and I've found the dialogue to be very interesting. As it has progressed, I have found myself thinking about education and certification in the Advanced Materials & Processing field, from the perspective of a SAMPE Young Professional.

My question to the SAMPE community is, aside from a PE in your field, are there any other certifications or professional training programs that are recognized and/or encouraged by the AM&P community? If so, what advice would you propose to recent graduates about pursuing such programs? For example, I understand there are several Composites Technician Certification courses - how would these be viewed compared to a 4 year (or graduate) degree? Are professional development seminars/continuing education credits enough? What recommendations would you provide to Young Professional looking to develop their education further?

I'm looking forward to hearing back from everyone and hopefully getting a great conversation going!

Thank you in advance,

Eric Schmid
