    Hello together,

    I am currently working on a publicly founded research project which investigates the strain rate dependence of endless fibre reinforced plastics. In extensive experiments both the composite material (UD prepreg without crimping fibres) and the epoxy resin will be characterized mechanically. Based on these results, several simulation models will be developed and calibrated. These models will be used to predict the strength and failure behaviour of the frp as a function of the strain rate.

    Diy you know where I can obtain the UD prepreg as well as the epoxy resin separately?  Or any hints that you can give me?
    I am well aware that the fibre-resin combination is a kept secret. The advantage you can gain from this project is that your material will be characterized mechanically and will be used in numerical models to calculate the deformation and failure behavior for both quasistatic and highly dynamic load cases.

    ​Hi Jonas,

    In a similar situation I could not convince my prepreg supplier to provide neat resin.
    Instead, I made a mold to squeeze a prepreg in the dwell-phase in a heat-press and cast the resin in a cavity.

    Hi Jonas,

    I am not certain where you might find prepreg samples and the corresponding resin, but often epoxy resin suppliers are willing to sample between 1 and 4 kilos of epoxy part A and you can separately purchase the hardener component that is usually mixed and partially reacted in to form the prepreg along with the carbon fiber.  If you were looking for a matched epoxy resin and UD carbon fiber system along with details about how to prepare the epoxy resin separately from a carbon fiber pre-preg system I would suggest reaching out to professors/universities that focus on carbon fiber pre-preg development.  For instance, University of Southern Mississippi professors in the School of Polymer Science & Engineering have done research on pre-preg, fiber-resin, and resin specific differences especially in the Wiggins Research Group.  You might also try contacting someone involved at CSIRO's carbon fibre research project as they may be interested in assisting in this type of endeavor especially as it will improve the quality of existing models and provide an additional future for collaborative research.

    If you only need a small amount of the resin, you can simply place your prepreg in a cup with Aceton to dissolve the resin matrix, remove the reinforcement once the Aceton is saturated and then simply let the solvent vaporise.
